Transform your mind from being scattered to being extraordinarily Focused
Enter your own mind and change it
Who am I? Am I good enough? What is my identity? These were some questions I was constantly asking myself a few years ago but now I know exactly who I am. I am a human being, a work in progress and not a robot and my mind is prone to being scattered all the time Before I used to hate myself. My biggest flaw in character was a lifelong habit of zoning out into a world of own . I can be in the middle of a conversation and zone out to a different universe. I lacked focus and thought it was the greatest weakness in character a person can possess. But one day, I woke up and decided to do something about this terrible flaw in my nature.
Here is the thing, I have always thought I was flawed. Lack of focus gives people low self esteem and I too shared this horrific perspective that I am not good enough. I was doomed to be unsuccessful and never achieve great things in life. But then one day, I noticed that perhaps I can do something about it. Here is how, I learned how to focus. Within two months I transformed from someone who cant pay attention to someone with an extraordinary amount of focus.
First of all, I experimented when I focus and when I don’t. It is very crucial that you experiment too. What makes you shut the world out and just be in the moment? There has got to be something. It could be video games, or art or a TV show. Staying in the moment is extremely important so no matter how non money making, unproductive or frivolous the activity is that makes you stay right in the moment where you belong, give some time to it everyday. Do not underestimate what such an activity is doing to your life and your state of mind. For me it was video games, so I decided to play video games for at least 2 hours a day. I started being more in the moment and decided to add some more fruitless activities to my daily routine such as watching some TV shows. I also stopped reading books on how to focus and started doing some recommended exercises everyday but of course experimented it all first.
- Mental arithmetic. Mental arithmetic really forces the mind to focus on something intensely and I made sure I did that for some time every day. So take a calculator and do some counting in the head, do not use a pen or a paper to calculate or even the calculator. Do all the calculations in your head and than check your answer with the calculator.
- Reading for a few hours. Instead of just reading IT and coding books. I decided that I should read something that is not related to work every day. I decided to go with biographies, psychology books and even cheesy romance novels.
- Yoga made me more focused but remember you have to do it everyday to feel the actual benefit. Yoga worked its magic on me and most people who does yoga will agree that it provides extraordinary results in keeping the mind focused and in the present moment.
- Socializing. Yes, friends are important and if you do not have any friends find some volunteer work and participate in it. We are all social creatures and being surrounded by people means that there are less chances of drifting off. Plus you could end up forming great networks and connections.
- Ask questions, not just others but mostly to yourself. For example, while reading this article you can ask yourself I wonder what this person does for a living. Or I wonder who owns getrevue and I wonder who built it or sold the newsletter company to twitter
These exercises have helped me a great deal and now I can stay focused even during the discussions of the most boring topic ever. If you are a software developer like I am, you know there are always problems and difficulty ahead. In order to solve problems you need to stay focused and in order to stay focused you would need to practice these exercises regularly.
Within two months you will see a new version of yourself.
Hope this helps !!!
