Stop Trying to Learn It All - A productivity Hack
Because life needs to be simple
Stop making so many learning plans
I had many courses pending on Udemy and I used to be super mean to myself for not finishing what I started. I would say things like I am so lazy or I am not good enough to be a successful programmer and I would intentionally back away from participating in exciting projects. I would convince myself that once the courses are finished I would start doing great projects. And I kept buying more courses and leaving them unfinished. Even if I didn’t buy courses, I always had you tube channels and videos waiting to get done. Being a software engineer can be both fun and overwhelming. Except that the latter can drain all the fun out. All my learning plans failed me. These learning plans would give me hope at first, it gave me a false hope of a future in which I am a better coder but then all these impossible plans began to cost me my confidence.
When I got offered a great job. I did not think I had the ability to do it. While blogging, I would often wonder if I am capable of doing what I was talking about.
So how did I get out of this loop
Then I made a super plan, a plan that I cannot possibly fail in. A plan that had no plans but guaranteed productivity success. It was the mother of all plans. I left my todo list empty.
I would fill my to do list after I did something really small but productive. Then I would mark it off. So if I made a navbar I would write that down and mark it off. If I finished only one part of a Udemy course. I would write down which part I have finished and than mark it off. I stopped thinking about what needed to be done and instead focused on how much I was accomplishing, no matter how small my accomplishments were. At first, I only had a few things done in my todo list and than later the list began to grow. You can download a great TODO app or find a simple note pad and write down everything manually. As for me, I wrote everything down in a notepad the old fashioned way. I made sure I put the dates properly. Later, when I browsed through all the pages I saw that I was in fact changing. I started out mostly un productive and ended up super productive. After I started finishing my tasks, I became more confident than ever. Before, I knew it many Udemy courses started to get finished without me ever planning to finish them. I was finishing because of fun not because it was an obligation and my productivity became way higher than I expected. I started participating in coding competitions and open source projects. And I developed a way better relationship with my clients because I was not only meeting the deadlines but beating them.
So never get into a loop of tutorial nightmares. Focus on doing things, start small and I promise you will end up learning more than you have planned.
Hope this helps!!!
